St George’s hospital update

07 December 2012

All patient services have now been successfully moved out of St George’s hospital in Hornchurch following the recent discovery of higher than normal levels of Legionella bacteria in the water supply. Patients are now being cared for elsewhere.

At the start of October North East London Foundation Trust, who provide community services on the site, had already taken the decision to move bed-based services before the winter. GPs and other stakeholders in Havering backed this decision.

The decision to move the beds was based on a combination of factors, including poor estate, unused and isolated areas, as well as issues with the heating system.

Our intention now is to redevelop the site, including creating a new purpose-built health centre for the benefit of local people and we will involve residents and other local stakeholders in taking forward any plans.

Havering CCG is now working hard to identify options for the longer term future of the site ahead of a wider consultation and engagement exercise that will include stakeholders and the public.
